THE ISSUE

In London, the number of people sleeping rough has almost doubled over the last four years.

Nationally around 50% of homeless cases are people under the age of 25. That’s an estimated 83,000 homeless young people, about 1 in every 100.

CAUSES

While unthinkable for most, the harsh reality for many is that a night on the street is their only choice. One of the main reported causes of homelessness among young people is relationship breakdowns, abuse, or neglect at home. In fact, 6 in 10 homeless young people become homeless due to family breakdowns.

Economic trends also hit young people harder than most. In the last 5 years, cuts and changes to youth service funding and the welfare system have made young people the most likely group to be living in poverty.

LONG TERM EFFECTS

Over half of the homeless youth are not in education, employment, or training and there is a proven increased risk of falling back into homelessness as a result of experiencing dispossession at a young age. It's a vicious cycle in which young people can become trapped and dictate the rest of their lives. Without the right support, the homeless youth are one of the most vulnerable groups in our society.
