A third of the world’s food supply is wasted yet a billion people are still going hungry.
In fact, all the world's hungry could be lifted out of malnourishment on less than a quarter of the food wasted in the US, UK and Europe. Even the bread and other cereal products thrown away in UK households alone would do so for 30 million. A total 7.3 million tonnes of food was thrown away in the UK in 2015, which if prevented, would have the environmental benefit of taking one in four cars off the road.
THE COST OF ANIMAL FARMING
University of Edinburgh scientists found that more than 75% of the world's grain crop that is fed to livestock is wasted. This accounts for 40% of all losses of harvested crops. More shocking still when we consider 56% of water in the US is used just growing feed crops for livestock. 8.3 million hectares of land are required to produce just the meat and dairy products wasted in UK homes and in US homes, shops and restaurants.
Wastage has become an integral part of the manufacturing process. Marks and Spencer insist its sandwich suppliers ditch four slices from each loaf they produce (the crust and first slice at either end) totalling 13,000 slices of fresh bread a day. Up to an estimated 40% of UK fruit and veg are rejected before they reach the shops, mostly due to the supermarkets' cosmetic standards. This even happens in countries like Kenya where millions of people are hungry.
